Events during 2008

January 2008

Our talk on Jan 11th was: Pre-Inca Cultures of Northern Peru, given by Pam Taylor.

February 2008

Feb 8th The History of Brookwood Cemetery talk given by John Clarke of the Brookwood Society.

The member's evening on Feb 22nd was a final review of the 2006 Garden Digs and analysis of pottery sherds.

March 2008

Our presentation on Mar 14th was: The Mary Rose - Discovery, Preservation and Future Plans, given by Dr Ken Collins of the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton.

April 2008

April 11th Tudor and Stuart Surrey Heath by local historian Phil Stevens

The society AGM was held on April 25th.

May 2008

May 9th was an illustrated talk Calleva Atrebatum: the Roman town of Silchester by Richard Hoyland.

The Roman Road digs took place at Easter and May Bank holidays across a line on the western edge of Holt Pound Inclosure near farnham, investigating the magnetic anomoly running from the County boundary.

June 2008

The evening of June 13th was History walk around Bagshot, starting from the Square at 7:30.

A group of members braved the rain on June 20th to walk to Bats Hogsty from the Wellington Statue car park, led by John Paddon.

July 2008

Our talk on July 11th was: Fortifications, given by John Paddon.

On Sunday July 13th there was a Garden Party Lunch at Virginia and Tony Wright's house in Fleet.

August 2008

Summer break.

Excavations: the August Bank Holiday Roman Road dig was at Roe Downs Farm, Medstead.

September 2008

Sept 12th we had two short talks: Hadrian at the British Museum, by Pam Taylor and South West Wales - ancient and modern, given by Sarah Fry.

During the summer Sarah Fry also published her eagerly awaited report Excavation of Pottery in Three Farnborough Gardens. This journal (Volume 5) covers the digs carried out during 2006.

October 2008

Oct 10th Amy Johnson, was a talk given by Mrs Elsie Russell about the life of the pioneering woman aviator.

November 2008

On Nov 14th our talk was: Libya - Greek, Roman and Byzantine sites, given by Pam Taylor.

December 2008

On Friday Dec 12th the final talk of the year was Semaphore Towers - London to Portsmouth, an illustrated talk by Richard Hoyland. The annual 'seasonal snacks' followed.
